Aquatic Class Descriptions

 

Aqua slim

Cardio Workout

A cardio based class with low to high impact aerobic movements taking place in the shallow end of pool. The aerobics is followed with toning of the abdominal and other muscle groups along with a final stretch. Music is provided for the tempo and the use of weights and noodles are optional.

FLOAT’N’TONE

Deep Water Program

This class takes place in the deep end of the pool with the use of an aquatic floatation belt or noodle. Cardio and extensive resistance training is constant throughout the whole body with primary and opposing muscle groups. Abdominal work and stretch are included. Anyone with a phobia may participate in shallower water. Music is also provided.

 

GET OFF YOUR ROCKERS!SPECIAL NEEDS PROGRAM

This class consists of  balance between low impact aerobics and toning specifics geared toward the mature participants who may have arthritis, hip replacements, or maybe in a physical therapy or rehabilitation situation.

Also recommended for those who may be new to Aquatic Fitness. Final stretch is included.

 

HEALTHY HEARTS- SENIOR AEROBICS

A cardio based class for seniors. This class will be mixed with Get Of Your Rockers! in the summer season.

 

ABOUT OUR INSTRUCTORS

 Skipper-Lola Byram: The “Range of Motion” class for people with special needs has been sponsored by the City of Manitou Springs for approximately 20 years. They have gone so far as to partially subsidies the costing order to enable the elderly, disabled and those with low income to participate. Local doctors and therapists have been sending patients both before and after surgery to strengthen muscles and make recovery shorter. A side benefit is the social aspect making participants feelcomfortable with others that have similar problems.The current leader of this group “Skipper” has been here for 17 or so years and has been trained at the Manitou Pool. She has helped many recover from surgery and may have commented on their increased flexibility and strength with her class. Arthritis Foundation.

Sandra Campbell: At age 40, when her youngest son was a year old, Sandra startedteaching Aerobics and Step. Moving to Colorado five years later, she started teaching at Peak Fitness in Woodland Park, just two weeks after moving into altitude. After a car accident a friend of hers introduced her to Water Aerobics at Manitou Pool. She got  her certification to teach, along with a Personal Trainer Certification. AFPAI-Aquatics Fitness Professionals Association, International International Sports Medicine Association.

Ellen Rome: Ellen Rome has been teaching water aerobics after experiencing the health benefits it gave her. She has thought at the Manitou Pool and Bally Fitness. Ellen Likes to make her classes challenging and fun and welcomes all to try and work at their own level. AAAI/ISMA American Aerobics Association International International Sports Medicine Association American Red Cross/CPR 

Kathy Tannant-Riggs: Our Tuesday night leader, Kathy, comes from a dental background. Certified by ACFE-American Council on Fitness Education. She believes Aqua-Aerobics give great benefits without the joint damage caused by land exercises.

Sheila Watkins: I am a personal trainer at the Manitou Pool and wanted to tell you a little about myself. Since the summer in 1992 I have been teaching group fitness classes.  I started by teaching step classes then soon thought aerobics, toning classes kickboxing and stretching. In 1995 I got my Personal Training certificate. I worked at the Broadmoor Hotel, Country Club of Colorado, World’s Gym, Cheyenne Mt. High School and YMCA.I have been trained individuals at their homes or at work like Penrose Hospital.

Mickey Simpson: I grew up in Manitou, learned how to swim at this pool. I was on the Manitou Mantarays team and later on I become  a Lifeguard and a swim instructor in 2001. AFPAI- Aquatics Fitness Professionals Association International,  WSI, ARC- Lifeguard.

Carol Nagel: It was my pleasure to become a certified Water Aerobics Instructor in February 2008 through the American Aerobic Association International and International Sports Medicine Association (AAAIISMA) program held at the Broadmoor Hotel.  I have attended water fitness classes taught by various instructors since losing 138 lbs. in 2004 and having knee replacement surgery.  Water aerobics and toning has helped me to keep the weight off and keep and improve on my mobility and flexibility without wear-and-tear on my joints.
